Mentoring

Our unique tailored mentoring programme will enable our kids to embrace their greatness.

Successful mentoring relationships go through four phases: preparation, negotiating, enabling growth, and closure. These sequential phases build on each other and vary in length. In each phase, there are specific steps and strategies that lead to mentoring excellence.

Types of mentoring we offer:

  • One-on-One Mentoring

  • Developmental & Career Mentoring

  • Group Based Mentoring

  • Peer-Based Mentoring

Our Key Mentoring Skills:

  • Listening Actively

  • Building Trust

  • Determining Goals

  • Building Capacity

  • Encouraging & Inspiring

Types of mentoring we offer:

One-on-One Mentoring

This type of mentoring is the most traditional of all the types of mentoring. Only the mentor and mentee are involved. Mentees have an opportunity to gain practical knowledge and insight from an experience SABE mentor who has achieved a level of expertise they aspire to attain.

Developmental & Career Mentoring

Our career mentor is someone who will their experience to guide and help mentees grow. They offer their advice and expertise to help you make decisions, overcome challenges, and progress in your career, education, or fitness goals.

Group-Based Mentoring

Group mentoring, also known as team mentoring, is where a SABE mentor will oversee multiple mentees at one time. Group mentoring helps to build a community that comes together to share ideas and experiences.

Peer-Based Mentoring

SABE peer mentoring creates a relationship between people who are at the same career/education/fitness stage or age, in which one person has more experience than the other in a particular domain and can provide support as well as knowledge and skills transfer. Peer mentoring may be a one-on-one relationship or experienced in a group.

Our Key Mentoring Skills

Active Listening

We practice the four types of listening skills: appreciative, empathic, comprehensive, and critical. Active listening involves SABE giving the other person time to explore their thoughts and feelings.

Building Trust

Trust is built over time. We will increase trust by keeping conversations and other communications with our students confidential, honouring scheduled meetings and calls, consistently showing interest and support, and by being honest with our students.

Determining Goals

Our internal and external mentors will share how they accomplished their personal and career/education/fitness goals. In addition, they will help students identify and achieve their own goals.

We will develop SABE's students capacity for learning and achieving their  goals by doing the following:

• Assisting with finding resources such as people, books, articles, tools and web-based information.

• Imparting knowledge and skills by explaining, giving useful examples, demonstrating processes, and asking thought-provoking questions.

• Helping to gain broader perspectives of their responsibilities.

• Discussing actions mentors have taken in their career and explaining your rationale.

Encouraging and Inspiring

According to Dr. Phillips-Jones’ research, giving encouragement is the mentoring skill most valued by protégés. There are many ways we will encourage  our students:

• We will communicate our belief in their capacity to grow personally, professionally and to reach their goals.

• Respond to their frustrations and challenges with words of support, understanding, encouragement and praise.

•Describe experiences, mistakes, and successes encountered on the road to achieving  goals;

• Hold discussions about people and events that have inspired and motivated their mentor.

• Mentors will Introduce SABE students to colleagues and peers who can be additional useful contacts or inspiring role models.
